The only other notable exhibition theatre is A. and G. Ferret’s Theatre
de 1’Exposition des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, 192 j. They had already designed one successful theatre, the Theatre des Champs Elysees of
1913, which had
been remarkable for its decoration (early Jazz) and its use of ferro-concrete;
the layout, however, was fairly conventional. In 1925 they attempted
something more innovatory. Their chief model was the Vieux Colombier
[Pi. 178]. The proscenium was abolished, the stage projecting well into
the auditorium and being divided (as at Cologne) by two concrete pillars.
Though attractive in illustrations, it failed in practice. The sight-lines were
poor, only a small part of the stage being visible to the whole audience at
the same time.
